How is it that I am guided by voices,

a bit too far, a bit too near

Or it that the whole creation is groaning

for everyone with ears to hear.

The melody echoes from reef to reef,

washing over me within and without

From mother to daughter, from mother to son,

from mother to mother down the years

to the world which you once loved

The world in which now songbirds need to sing at night

and shark mothers give birth all by themselves

The world where brown bears give up on hibernation.

Ice,  rain,  clouds,  lightning

And I could change, if you wanted me too.

Just like the climate changes

see my heart melt, feel my temperature rising,

The world where frogs and lizards lose their leaves

and chestnut trees bloom before the spring has come

The world that forces squirrels and chipmunks up the mountains

hiding behind a door

why do i always notice you

we are like flowers

shining in the sun

red blue and yellow

waiting for hummingbirds to come

Nature, Mother, Nature, the society we’re in

seems bound together in corporate sin

With my silent endorsements as the money wheels turn

Nature, Mother Nature, I think they’ve got the right idea

These monks in Sri Lanka who’ve been ordaining trees

I want to be called to this new religion where

Rivers are priests and hills do teach the truth about land and air.

I thought that you could rise

I thought that you would lead me to heaven

I thought that you could hide

But it was Always

Someone else

who found the right words, found the right path

I know that you despise the young

you want them to die

I know that you don’t care for your neighbour

you only care for you pride

who would protect me, circle round me

I will be more careful the next time

I put me trust in my eyes

I will look to the colour of your hair

and how it lies
